A couple of months ago, a graphic artist contacted me asking for an interview. She had stumbled upon my yoga post written back in March 2014 about why I gave up Bikram yoga and thought, perhaps, talking to me would provide her with some insight and possible inspiration for a new piece she was working on related to her experience with Bikram yoga.

Yesterday, the artist, Eroyn Franklin, contacted me and shared her completed yoga-related article published to The Nib. She featured me in part of the piece (detailed above), which I was honored by and thrilled about. (I’ve never been a cartoon before…at least not that I am aware.)

To my teacher training class… I love you!

For the past 10 months, I have participated in a 200-hour yoga teacher training program. Outside of my day-job responsibilities, my life has been very yoga- centric and yoga-intense.

Although I love everything I have learned and the friendships I have formed, I am ready for a much-needed break once I complete my final test/practicum in two weeks.

The program was not an intense, emersion. Rather, it was a weekend-formatted program designed for busy folks like myself, people who have families and career responsibilities. My fellow yoga trainees come from varying backgrounds and cultures, range in age, and vary in gender. There are men, women, fathers, mothers, sisters, brothers, wives, husbands, scientists, college students, college professors, engineers, poets, musicians, photographers, web developers, and world travelers.

For the past 10 months, one weekend per month (sometimes two weekends),
we were dedicated to practicing and training. Training weekends began with a 90-minute, Saturday-morning practice at 10:45 a.m. and ended with a 30-minute meditation on Sunday at 7:00 p.m.

In preparation for these weekends, we read yoga books, practiced yoga, read
some more yoga books, and did some more practice. From books on breathing, anatomy, history, and Ayurveda to practices of restorative, yin, vinyasa, and prenatal yoga, we consumed and digested a plethora of information both on and off the mat.

Once certified later this summer, some of us will go on to teach; some of us
won’t. But all of us, I suspect, will take what we’ve learned and deepen our
practices and continue journeying into ourselves.

This post is simply to thank my fellow trainees for their inspiration, dedication,
and motivation. I learned something from each and every member of my class and will never forget my experience and how it has changed me, my yoga practice, and my approach to teaching new students.

When we choose love over fear

All I know how to do today is share what I am passionate about with zero expectations. It’s how I operate in every corner of my life, from raising my son and being a friend to working my day job and training to become a yoga teacher.

I’m not lucky, fortunate or privileged. Where I find myself today has less to do with the people in my life who love me but more to do with my ability to believe in their love and that I am worthy of that love.

I don’t know where tomorrow will take me. I just do things today because I love doing them. I love life, and I love to share what I have learned. That’s it.

I have no desire or wish to be anyone’s guru or to be revered. And I can’t control how people judge me. That’s probably the most valuable lesson I have learned on this journey: I can only control how I view myself and my abilities. That view can either stifle me or empower me.

I simply have something inside of me that drives and propels me to get it out of me. My one hope is that someone, anyone, will find what I share valuable and useful and will inspire that person to share what is inside of them, too.

Sure, I’m a bit of an idealist. I want to see everyone succeed. I want to see people happy despite their pasts or their current struggles. And I honestly believe it is absolutely possible…a bunch of happy people co-existing and growing and sharing.

The pleasant surprises of yoga

My yoga practice surprises me daily. It’s one of the reasons I love yoga so much.

Whether it’s suddenly finding myself in a pose/asana I was unable to do last week or finding my mind free of a long-held, unwanted belief, I’m repeatedly and joyfully surprised.
